Making a ping pong table yourself is fairly straight forward. The table is usually made of pressed wood (wafer board or particle board) or plywood.

The tricky part is getting a table built to ITTF specifications. Normally, in the USA, sheet wood products are usually 4 feet wide by 8 feet long. However, a table tennis table size, according to ITTF rules, is 1.525 meters (5 feet) wide and 2.74 meters (9 feet) long.

Some ping pong table plans go it the easy way and use a 4 ft by 8 ft sheet wood product, either MDF or plywood.
